A phrase that describes this district of La Vera would be “a little known neighbourhood with history”. If you look closely, it preserves old buildings such as the Captain’s House, a traditional construction from the 19th century, which perfectly symbolizes typical Canary architecture. It also houses traditions such as its May Festivities in honour of the Holy Cross, where the square is the meeting point for the thanksgiving feast and the folk festivals.

Festivities in honour of the Holy Cross of La Vera

An example of how some of the festivities that were celebrated until the 80s of the 20th century were recovered. The main day is on May 3rd with the festival of the Holy Cross, or the Sunday that is closest to this date. These are small but lively festivities where various recreational and religious events take place. (More information)

Festivities in honour of Saint Clement the 1st, pope and martyr

Another example of reacquired festivals are those held in honour of Saint Clement (November 23rd), where thanks to the locals’ persistence the festival of the patron saint of the Malpaís of Santa Úrsula was recovered after being discontinued in the 60s of the 20th century due to an unfortunate incident, where the statue fell to the ground due to a negligence during a display of fireworks. Casa del Capitán (Casa de la Vera)

The “Casa del Capitán” (Captain’s House), also called “Casa de La Vera”, is one of the best known estates in Santa Úrsula. It is a country estate that was built in 1860 by the captain of the military detachment Don Diego González Martín. What makes this building special and significant is the exterior decoration, very rare in the Canary Islands, hence its importance.

Musical and Cultural Association Ernesto Beteta

In 1993 the  Santa Úrsula City Council decided to form its own band with Don Ernesto Beteta Garmendia, who was hired as director of the Municipal Music Band. During the festival of Saint Cecilia (November 23) and with the “Santa Cecilia de Tacoronte” Music Band, the Santa Úrsula Music Band was presented. Several directors have been in charge of it, the most important being its founder, Don Ernesto Beteta Garmendia. This formation has participated in numerous events, band meetings, tributes, concerts and processions, both within the municipality and outside of it. (More information)
